      Periscope - The Viewer for EuroWordNet databases

CONTENTS
===========

This Package contains Periscope, Lernout & Hauspie's viewer for
EuroWordNet databases, which can be used to view samples of the EuroWordNet database.


PERISCOPE SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
=============================

* Microsoft Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0
* 2 Mb disk space (database itself can remain on the CD)
* 16 Mb RAM
* Super VGA (800x600) monitor or better recommended


INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
=========================

Unzip the Periscope documents in a folder or directory (files are zipped with WinZip95). Open the 'Add/Remove Programs' applet from the Control Panel and click on the 'Install...' push button. Browse to the folder or directory in which the Periscope file have been unzipped.

You can also directly double click on the Setup icon.


DATABASE FILES
==============

The installation program does not copy the database files to your
local hard disk. These have to be down-loaded separately and stored together in a single folder or subdirectory. You can instruct Periscope to open the database
directly from this directory. You will need at least 70 Mb free disk space to store all the data (including a version of WordNet1.5).

DATABASE CONTENT
================

The database files included contain selected sample data for three
languages (Spanish, Dutch and Italian), plus two special languages:
one containing the Princeton WordNet 1.5 data, the other containing
the EuroWordNet Top-Concept ontology.


RUNNING PERISCOPE
=================

To start Periscope, select Programs from the Start menu; next
select the EuroWordNet folder; then select the Periscope item.

The first time you run Periscope, it will ask to open the
database. You must select the path to the database (the directory where you have stored the data) and select the file called EWN.FDB.

On subsequent launches, Periscope will automatically attempt
to open the last used database. If Periscope cannot open the previous
database, an error message will be displayed. After this, you can select
a new path to the database.

MANUALS
A Manual for Periscope is stored in \MAN\VIEWER which can be dowloaded as well. It is in HTML format which can be viewed with a WEB browser and in Word-97 format. There is also a Help included in the program.

KNOWN PROBLEM
=============

On older Windows 95 systems, the 'Data Tip' functionality may
only show up to 80 characters of a definition. This can be fixed
by installing Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0 or higher.
