Career Prospects

The MSc Logic provides intensive interdisciplinary research training in the broad area of Logic, Language and Information. Most of our graduates choose to pursue a research career, typically in academia, and succeed in obtaining attractive PhD positions at universities around the world in a variety of relevant fields (e.g., Logic, Computer Science, Cognitive Science, Linguistics, Philosophy, and Mathematics).

But this is not your only option. The professional skills acquired in the MSc Logic programme (e.g., analytical thinking, communication skills such as presenting or technical writing, and team working in interdisciplinary and international groups) are also highly valued by other types of employers. In recent years, popular career choices have included management consulting, education, software engineering, and other jobs in the information and communication technology sector.

Here is a list of career events/initiatives organised by ILLC/UvA:

-Life after the ILLC event organised by ILLC PhD council where ILLC/MoL alumni share their experience on life after ILLC in or outside of academia. For more information visit https://sites.google.com/view/lifeafterillc

-Beta career event organised by Uva, where students meet companies (normally in April): http://www.betacareerevent.nl

-Ace Venturelab (helps starting up science-based and technology companies): http://www.ace-venturelab.org

Another way to get in touch with the non-academic world is to do an internship in a company. In general, internships cannot give credits in the MoL. We strongly discourage internships during the course periods, but internships over the summer are a good way to learn more about non-academic career perspectives.
