This guide is handed to all first year students at one of the introductory meetings. In case you did not get this (yet) or you lost it, you can find the pdf file here.
The International Office FNWI takes care of a number of services for foreign students such as housing, insurance and providing a student ID card.
More information can be found on their webpage and on the webpage of the International Office UvA.
The UvA student ID card gives access or discounts to facilities such as libraries, student restaurants, the sports centre and the medical centre.
The Universiteit van Amsterdam has a well-equipped central library
with over four million volumes and numerous specialised libraries. The
libraries for mathematics, computer science, philosophy and
linguistics will also be useful to students of logic.

here.
Every MSc student will have a student login (student number@student.uva.nl) and a login for the computers of the Faculty of Science (username@science.uva.nl). Students will have regular access to computers with e-mail and internet facilities.
For more information, see the help pages of the Faculty of Sciences and the ILLC.
The ILLC maintains a special room for exclusive use of the MSc in Logic students. This room offers desk space, computing facilities and other amenities to the MSc students. The students help organising the day-to-day matters concerning the MoL room in the MoL room committee.
The MoL Room is a unique opportunity to meet, work together and encounter the special international spirit and flair of the GPiL. In addition to that, special events are occasionally organized.
All students may practice and participate in numerous sports at
special student rates at the university sports centre. Activities
offered include for example tennis, fitness, fencing, karate, (ice)
skating, indoor climbing, hockey, soccer, volleyball, basketball,
canoeing, water polo etc.

The Universiteit van Amsterdam organises housing for fee-paying
international students who participate in the Graduate Programme in Logic
(provided they apply before the relevant deadlines).
The university cannot guarantee housing for other categories of
students, such as exchange students. Some university residence halls are
in the centre of town,
while others are as far as 30 minutes from the centre by public
transportation.

The Graduate Programme in Logic is an English-taught
curriculum. Outside the curriculum, there are many courses and events
in Dutch. Students are encouraged to learn Dutch.
The Institute for
Dutch as a Second Language (INTT) offers courses at different levels
and for different periods of time.
If you are interested in attending a Dutch course, please state this at your
application.

The International Student Network
To help students find their way at the universiteit van Amsterdam and
in the city itself, the Universiteit van Amsterdam has set up the
International Student Network (ISN). ISN works in close co-operation
with other student organisations.
The ISN also organized an introduction week (one week before classes start in September)
During this week, students can get to
know the city and Dutch student life.
A large range of activities takes place, ranging from exploring the
city and the university to testing food in the student restaurant. The
evenings are for experiencing the cultural life of the capital
first-hand. We recommend that you participate in this enjoyable start
of your life in Amsterdam.

Most of our students aim at a career in academia, and many of our graduates succeed in going on to get a PhD degree in Logic or related field after the MSc Logic. The mentors and the thesis supervisors will advise students in their career plans in academia and beyond.
Some students however may have trouble taking the necessary steps to a future career and talking ot their mentor, other ILLC staff members or fellow students doesn't help much.
In addition to the immediate academic career support of the mentoring system, the Universiteit van Amsterdam offers career advise through 'het Loopbaan Advies Centrum' (LAC) or 'the Career Planning Center'.
You can find some information about the Career Planning Center here. Dutch (speaking) students can have a look here.
If you need more specific help you can best talk to one of the career advisers. They als speak
English. You can do so during office hours:
by phone:
Tuesday to Friday from 9 to 10 am
in person:
Tuesday to Friday from 11 to 12 am
Contact address:
Career Planning Center (Loopbaan Advies Centrum)
Binnengasthuisstraat 9 (in the Service and Information Center)
1012 ZA Amsterdam
phone: 020-525 8080 (ask for a career adviser)
There also is a documentation center, where you can find a lot of useful information as well.
