The courses cover classical l ogic and its meta-theory, developments in modal an d non-classical logic, as well as historical aspec ts in the philosophy of logic since Frege. Mathema tical models that had a wider impact on philosophi cal model building, like probability theory and ga me theory, are also taken into account. The course s also introduce systematically formal semantics a s it is studied by philosophers and linguists. A fter a three day recapitulation of the standard te chnical vocabulary and some of the central metalog ical results, a philosophy of language/ linguistic s branch will take a closer look at the use of for mal methods in specific problem areas and at speci fic formal theories. This will be paralleled by co urses for philosophers working in areas other than philosophy of language and linguistics, offering closer examinations of applications of formal meth ods in the philosophy of science, mind, and action . The courses are designed for graduate students o f philosophy and linguistics who lack a background in mathematics but work in a field that requires the assessment of formal methods or results obtain ed by such methods. Student applications will be accepted until June 15, 2007. We will accept 30 s tudents in total.
