The c oncept of infinity has fascinated philosophers and \n mathematicians for many centuries: e.g., t he distinction between\n the potential and ac tual infinite appears in Aristotle's Physics\n (in his treatment of the paradoxes of Zeno) and the notion was\n implied in the attempts to s harpen the method of approximation\n (startin g as early as Archimedes and running through the m iddle\n ages and into the nineteenth century) . Modern mathematics opened\n the doors to th e wealth of the realm of the infinities by means\n of the set-theoretic foundations of mathemat ics.\n

\nAny philosophical inter action with concepts of infinite must\n have at least two aspects: first, an inclusive examinat ion of\n the various branches and application s, across the various\n periods; but second, it must proceed in the critical light of\n ma thematical results, including results from meta-ma thematics.\n The conference History & Phi losophy of Infinity will\n emphasize philosop hical, empirical and historical approaches.\n
