Lectureship/Research Fellowship in Computational Linguistics (4 yrs)

The Institute for Logic, Language and Computation (ILLC) of the University of Amsterdam has a vacancy for a full-time combined lectureship/research fellowship (50/50) in Computational Linguistics.

The successful candidate should have proven excellence in research in natural language processing or related areas. Experience in teaching statistical NLP subjects is a strong advantage. Candidates with expertise in statistical NLP, machine learning and/or data-oriented methods are especially encouraged to apply.

Tasks:

  • teach natural language processing subjects within the Institute's Bachelor's and Master's programmes
  • To supervise and mentor students, student projects and Master's theses.
  • To propose and develop new courses in the area of natural language processing
  • To independently carry out research in computational linguistics
  • To contribute to research proposals for external funding

Requirements:

  • PhD in computational linguistics or computer science
  • Demonstrable experience with statistical models and/or machine learning for NLP supported by a publication track record
  • Strong affinity with teaching and supervising students (and preferably experience with lecturing at the Bachelor's and/or the Master's level)
  • Strong command of the English language

The total duration of this combined position will be four years (tenure is not planned). The first year will serve as an evaluation period for determining the suitability of the appointee for the position.

Starting date: as soon as possible but no later than January 2008
The salary is in accordance with the university regulations for academic personnel, and will range from € 3.060,-- before tax, up to a maximum of € 4.190,-- per month, depending on previous experience. Social benefits as common at Dutch Universities.
