The Institute for Logic, Language and Computation (ILLC) is a research institute at the University of Amsterdam, in which researchers from the Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Humanities collaborate. Its central research area is the study of fundamental principles of encoding, transmission and comprehension of information. Research at ILLC is interdisciplinary, and aims at bringing together insights from various disciplines concerned with information and information processing, such as computational linguistics, logic, mathematics, computer science, linguistics, cognitive science, artificial intelligence and philosophy.

This position is part of the larger Dutch research consortium Language in Interaction (lead-organisation Radboud University, Nijmegen). The research consortium brings together researchers from nine different research institutions in the Netherlands, with complementary expertise in a highly interdisciplinary area of research. Within the LiI consortium, a number of Top Research Fellows are foreseen. The position comes with a PhD fellowship.

The position will be embedded within the ILLC within the Faculty of Science (FNWI) of the University of Amsterdam. The researcher will be appointed either in the Language & Computation or in the Logic & Language programme at ILLC, and will form a new interface between these.

Project description

One of the major challenges in current research on the human language system is to unify formal modelling of crucial interactive linguistic activities such as communication, learning and argumentation, with the wide-ranging experimental approaches to language found in psychology and neuroscience.

The successful candidate will be at the heart of a new research group whose aim is to promote the interaction between formal, logical, semantic, or/and computational modelling of language and cognition within the ILLC. To match these research tasks, the successful candidate will also be given a light teaching load in the MSc Logic, the MSc Brain and cognitive science, and/or the BSc/MSc Artificial Intelligence.

Requirements

The ideal candidate has a strong grasp of logical and/or linguistic and/or computational approaches to language, while at the same time bridging the gap to cognitive modelling of language in a credible and successful manner.

  • A PhD degree in a relevant field;
  • a strong background in formal and/or computational modelling of language;
  • experience / expertise in experimental cognitive science;
  • a well-established international reputation;
  • a strong record of peer-reviewed international publications;
  • experience and success in applying for external funding;
  • experience with (co-)supervision of PhD students;
  • management skills required for academic leadership;
  • outstanding didactic skills, teaching experience and a clear view about teaching.
