The Institute for Logic, Language and Computation (ILLC) is a research institute at the University of Amsterdam in which researchers from the Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Humanities collaborate. Its central research area is the study of fundamental principles of encoding, transmission and comprehension of information. Research at ILLC is interdisciplinary, and aims at bringing together insights from various disciplines concerned with information and information processing, such as logic, mathematics, computer science, philosophy, linguistics, cognitive science, artificial intelligence, and musicology.

The ILLC is strengthening its position as a leading institution in the study of logic, language and computation, by opening a vacancy for an Assistant Professor position in any of its three research groups: Logic and Language, Logic and Computation, and Language and Computation (see also People at ILLC ). The successful candidate should have excellent research skills in one of ILLC's research areas as well as teaching skills in one of ILLC's teaching programmes in the Faculty of Science (Logic, AI, Computer Science, Mathematics or Cognitive Science).

Job Description

  • Conduct independent research in one of ILLC's research groups and areas, resulting in contributions to leading international publications (60%);
  • teach and develop teaching activities in one of the fields within the ILLC (40%);
  • (co-)supervision of Bachelor's and Master's theses;
  • (co-)supervision of PhD candidates;
  • acquisition of research funding.

ILLC expects all staff from UD upwards to share in the administrative and organisational tasks at ILLC (e.g. committee memberships, etc.).

Requirements

  • Relevant PhD degree;
  • excellent research skills and experience, evidenced by publications in renowned international journals or conference proceedings;
  • teaching experience at university level and demonstrable didactic abilities and/or training. Within the Faculty of Science, newly appointed Assistant Professors follow a didactic training trajectory, which should lead up to completion of a qualification certificate for academic teaching (basiskwalificatie onderwijs, BKO) within two years;
  • team spirit and a strong affinity with ILLC's multi-disciplinary environment.

ILLC expects its tenured staff to acquire sufficient fluency in the Dutch language within three years of appointment.

Further Information

Appointment

The vacancy is for a permanent position. According to standard university policy, this implies that experienced candidates will be offered a permanent contract after an initial probation period of three years. Based on a full-time appointment (38 hours per week) the gross monthly salary will range from € 3227,- to € 4418,- depending on qualifications and experience (scale 11). If track record and experience may justify a higher level of performance, a higher salary scale (scale 12) is negotiable. The salary will be increased by 8 % holiday allowance and 8.3 % annual bonus. The Collective Employment Agreement (CAO) of the Dutch Universities is applicable.

The starting date of the appointment should be as soon as possible, but no later than January 2014.

The University of Amsterdam is striving for a better balance in its staff whereby, in case of equal suitability, the appointment of a female candidate will have our preference. Women are, therefore, strongly encouraged to apply.
