Abstract:

The paper will identify three gades of variable involvement: artifactual, semantic, and syntactic. The third and strongest grade will be rejected; that is, it will be argued that syntax is variable-free. An arteifactual position will be tentatively commended. Syntax will remain essentiall gappy, however.
