SUMMARY:Epistemology in Ontologies (EPINON II), Ca
 pe Town, South Africa

LOCATION:Cape Town, South Africa
DESCRIPTION:Formal ontologies and knowledge repres
entation mainly focus on characterising how a give
n domain is structured, i.e., they identify a set
of concepts, entities, and relations together with
the constraints that hold for this domain. The st
ructure of the characterisation is usually intende
d to reflect the point of view of significant expe
rts or a realist view of how things about a partic
ular domain are in reality. The aim of this worksh
op is to explore an epistemological stance in form
al ontology and knowledge representation and focus
on the assessment of the modelling provided by th
e ontology designer. In particular, we are intere
sted in fostering the discussion about two intertw
ined research directions: epistemology of ontology
and and ontology of epistemology. We are interest
ed in formal and ontological approaches to the def
initions of the concepts that are relevant to the
assessment of the perspective of the ontology desi
gner. Problems related to this direction include:
ontology of general epistemological concepts (e.g.
  proof, argument, explanation, epistemic reliabili
ty, trust), ontology of cognitive concepts (percep
tion, reasoning, sensations), ontology of data and
measurements. We welcome two types of submission
s: Regular articles (8-12 pages including the bibl
iography) for presenting original unpublished work
, neither submitted to, nor accepted for, any othe
r venue, and Short articles (5 pages including the
bibliography) for presenting brief descriptions o
f ongoing research and projects, preliminary appro
aches, or descriptions of related previously publi
 shed research.
