SUMMARY:Workshop on Formal Causation, Rostock, Ger
 many
DTSTART;VALUE=DATE:20181022
DTEND;VALUE=DATE:20181023
LOCATION:Rostock, Germany
DESCRIPTION:Formal causation, one of the four trad
itional kinds of causation distinguished by Aristo
tle, is currently heavily under-researched and has
even fallen into disrepute. Formal causation is a
t play whenever a thing has a certain property bec
ause it is of a certain kind. Such properties are
normally called essential properties. For instance
, whales have the disposition to breathe with lung
s because they are mammals. There is an extensive
and influential trend in contemporary philosophy s
tudying causation in terms of dispositions, while
the question of why things have some dispositions
(or other properties) and lack others in the first
place has largely been ignored. The conference w
ill explore formal causation, i.e., the view that
an object having a property such as a disposition
can be explained through kind membership. Some of
the talks will be historical work, mainly on Arist
otle, some will be systematic work on the contempo
rary discussion, and some will combine both histor
ical and systematic approaches. Especially relevan
t for formal causation are the contemporary debate
s about essence and necessity, dependence and grou
nding, laws of nature, universals, dispositions, a
nd functions. The conference is funded through th
e DFG-project 'Formal Causation in Aristotle and i
n Analytic Metaphysics and Philosophy of Science'.
