SUMMARY:Analogical Reasoning in Science and Mathem
 atics, Munich, Germany
DTSTART;VALUE=DATE:20181026

LOCATION:Munich, Germany
DESCRIPTION:Analogy is a powerful, yet controversi
al, tool of scientific reasoning. Indeed, many ach
ievements in the history of science and mathematic
s have been driven by analogical inferences. Moreo
ver, one can formulate conjectures about domains i
nto which one does not have empirical access just
based on analogy with other known domains. Nonethe
less, from a logical point of view analogical infe
rences do not yield conclusions with certainty. So
, what is it that justifies the use of analogy in
science and mathematics? And how reliable is analo
gical reasoning? This conference will address such
  open philosophical problems.
