SUMMARY:International Conference on Simplicities &
  Complexities, Bonn, Germany
DTSTART;VALUE=DATE:20190522
DTEND;VALUE=DATE:20190524
LOCATION:Bonn, Germany
DESCRIPTION:Throughout the 20th century the scienc
es have approached more and more complex phenomena
, in tune with the increased social relevance of s
cientific knowledge. The perceived need to address
complexity head-on has led to a broader reaction
against simplification and reductionism within the
sciences. However, if simplicity, in its various
outfits, has proven an unreliable guide, what shou
ld it be replaced with? Looking at the various str
ategies of addressing complexity in the sciences a
nd the disciplines reflecting upon them, it appear
s that the notion is at least as variegated as sim
plicity. The aim of the conference is to analyze,
differentiate, and connect the various notions an
d practices of simplicity and complexity, in physi
cs as well as in other sciences. We invite contrib
utors from a spectrum of disciplines, scientists a
nd scholars reflecting on their respective and nei
ghboring research fields, as well as historians, p
hilosophers, and sociologists of science investiga
ting the epistemologies, practices, and discourses
of fellow epistemic communities. The conference w
ill thrive on intense discussion surpassing discip
linary boundaries. The organizing committee invit
es abstract submissions on the theme of the confer
ence. Submissions are welcome from the broad spect
rum of scientific fields. In addition to being con
sidered for giving a contributing talk, all submis
sions will also be considered for our essay compet
 ition (unless requested otherwise).
