SUMMARY:Workshop "Reasoning, Argumentation and Log
ic in Natural Language: Experiments and Models", B
 ochum, Germany
DTSTART;VALUE=DATE:20190403
DTEND;VALUE=DATE:20190405
LOCATION:Bochum, Germany
DESCRIPTION:The workshop examines reasoning, argum
entation and logic from the perspective of experim
ental pragmatics. Whereas these issues have a long
tradition in the philosophy of language and theor
etical linguistics, research in experimental pragm
atics has come to focus on them only recently. Thi
s is surprising since pragmatic phenomena exert st
rong influence on which arguments count as sound a
nd valid in everyday reasoning. Relevant phenomena
include (a) the disambiguation of polysemous word
s, (b) context effects on the interpretation of co
ntent words and (c) pragmatic properties of logica
l connectives (e.g., order effects associated with
and) as well as of quantifiers (e.g., the scalar
implicature from some to not all). The workshop fo
cuses on (i) experimental approaches and (ii) empi
rically driven models regarding these as well as o
ther pragmatic phenomena in the domain of argument
ation and reasoning. Submissions can be made for
presentations, posters, or both. Please submit one
-page abstract (pdf); a second page may contain re
 ferences, graphs and tables.
