SUMMARY:Truthmaker Semantics: Applications in Phil
 osophy and Linguistics, Hamburg, Germany
DTSTART;VALUE=DATE:20190729

LOCATION:Hamburg, Germany
DESCRIPTION:Kit Fine and the Emmy Noether Project
Relevance are delighted to announce a conference o
n truthmaker semantics and its applications in phi
losophy and linguistics. Truthmaker semantics dev
iates from the familiar framework of possible worl
d semantics, in that the notion of a possible worl
d is replaced by a more general notion of a state
that applies to any fragment of a world, and that
a sentence is taken to be made true by a state onl
y if every part of the state is involved in render
ing the sentence true. A significant advantage of
truthmaker semantics over the possible worlds appr
oach is that it connects sentences with the worldl
y items that are directly relevant to their truth,
thereby allowing important and intuitive hyperint
ensional distinctions to be drawn in a natural and
formally elegant way. While the framework was ori
ginally developed as a semantics for relevant enta
ilment by van Fraassen in the 1960s, recent develo
pments have demonstrated its wide applicability in
  logic, metaphysics, philosophy and epistemology.
Eight one-hour slots (up to 40 minutes for the ta
lk, followed by 20 minutes for discussion) are ava
ilable for contributed papers on the topic of the
conference. If you would like to present a paper,
please submit a CV and an extended abstract of up
to 2,000 words, suitable for anonymous review.
