Kit Fine and the Emmy Noether Project Relevance are delight ed to announce a conference on truthmaker semantic s and its applications in philosophy and linguisti cs.
\n\nTruthmaker semantics deviates from the familiar framework of possible world semantic s, in that the notion of a possible world is repla ced by a more general notion of a state that appli es to any fragment of a world, and that a sentence is taken to be made true by a state only if every part of the state is involved in rendering the se ntence true. A significant advantage of truthmaker semantics over the possible worlds approach is th at it connects sentences with the worldly items th at are directly relevant to their truth, thereby a llowing important and intuitive hyperintensional d istinctions to be drawn in a natural and formally elegant way. While the framework was originally de veloped as a semantics for relevant entailment by van Fraassen in the 1960s, recent developments hav e demonstrated its wide applicability in logic, me taphysics, philosophy and epistemology.
\nEight one-hour slots (up to 40 minute s for the talk, followed by 20 minutes for discuss ion) are available for contributed papers on the t opic of the conference.
