SUMMARY:11th International Conference on Formal On
tology in Information Systems (FOIS 2020), Bolzano
  (Italy)
DTSTART;VALUE=DATE:20200914
DTEND;VALUE=DATE:20200917
LOCATION:Bolzano (Italy)
DESCRIPTION:The advent of complex information syst
ems that rely on robust, coherent and formal repre
sentations of their subject matter, has led to the
exploitation of ontological analysis and ontology
-based representation. The systematic study of suc
h analysis and representation is at the center of
the modern discipline of formal ontology, which is
a general theory of the types of entities and rel
ations making up domains of interest. Researchers
in many domains engage with formal ontology to pro
vide a solid foundation for their work. The FOIS
conference is a meeting point for all researchers
with an interest in formal ontology. FOIS 2020 inc
ludes a number of activities: FOIS conference (sin
gle track program), workshops (in conjunction with
EKAW 2020 and ICBO 2020) ,tutorials (in conjuncti
on with EKAW 2020 and ICBO 2020), a young research
ers symposium, a demo and industry track, and an o
ntology show and tell. As in previous years, FOIS
2020 aims to be a nexus of interdisciplinary resea
rch and communication. Sadly because of the COVID
-19 FOIS 2020 was not able to occur as planned. Wh
ile papers were reviewed and the proceedings will
be published by IOS Press, the physical conference
has been cancelled. In recognition of FOIS’ impor
tant social function within the applied ontology c
ommunity, it was also decided to run a FOIS editio
n in September 2021. FOIS 2021 will happen in Bolz
ano, and it will include all the events originally
planned for FOIS 2020 including the Early Career
Symposium, the Ontology Show and Tell, as well as
the Demo and Industrial Track. The conference enc
ourages new high quality submissions on both theor
etical issues and concrete applications. The FOIS C
onference seeks full-length high-quality papers on
a wide range of topics. An ideal FOIS paper will
address both content-related ontological issues, t
heir formal representation, as well as their impac
t and relevance for some aspect of information sys
tems. Related activities, such as workshops and tu
torials, may specify different submission formats,
for example, short papers or posters.
