The growi ng cultural import of computing practices has beco me ever more pressing in our days in all dimension s of social life. The global and collective nature of the challenges our epoch is facing (e.g. clima te change, global pandemics, systemic inequalities , resurgence of totalitarianism, to name a few) re quires a comprehensive perspective on computing, w here social and cultural aspects occupy a central position. For these reasons, thinking about machin es asks today for an interdisciplinary approach, w here art is as necessary as engineering, anthropol ogical insights as important as psychological mode ls, and the critical perspectives of history and p hilosophy as decisive as the axioms and theorems o f theoretical computer science.
\n\nFor mo re than a decade, the 'History and Philosophy of C omputing' Conference (HaPoC) has contributed to bu ilding such an interdisciplinary community and env ironment. We aim to bring together historians, phi losophers, computer scientists, social scientists, designers, manufacturers, practitioners, artists, logicians, mathematicians, each with their own ex perience and expertise, to take part in the collec tive construction of a comprehensive image of comp uting.
\nFor HaPoC 2021, we w elcome contributions from researchers from differe nt disciplinary horizons who intend to participate in the debate on the impact of computers on cultu re, science, and society from the perspective of t heir area of expertise, and who are open to engage in interdisciplinary discussions across multiple fields. Topics include but are not limited to:
\n\n- Historical and philosophical perspectiv es on computing knowledge, objects and practices - Social, cultural and pedagogical aspects of compu ting - Computing and the human sciences - Epistemo logical dimensions of computing - Impact of comput ing technologies - Computing and the arts.
