SUMMARY:6th International Conference on the Histor
y and Philosophy of Computing (HaPoC 2021), Virtua
 l & Zürich (Switzerland)

DESCRIPTION:The growing cultural import of computi
ng practices has become ever more pressing in our
days in all dimensions of social life. The global
and collective nature of the challenges our epoch
is facing (e.g. climate change, global pandemics,
 systemic inequalities, resurgence of totalitariani
sm, to name a few) requires a comprehensive perspe
ctive on computing, where social and cultural aspe
cts occupy a central position. For these reasons,
thinking about machines asks today for an interdis
ciplinary approach, where art is as necessary as e
 ngineering, anthropological insights as important
as psychological models, and the critical perspect
ives of history and philosophy as decisive as the
axioms and theorems of theoretical computer scienc
 e. For more than a decade, the 'History and Philo
sophy of Computing' Conference (HaPoC) has contrib
uted to building such an interdisciplinary communi
ty and environment. We aim to bring together histo
rians, philosophers, computer scientists, social s
 cientists, designers, manufacturers, practitioners
, artists, logicians, mathematicians, each with th
eir own experience and expertise, to take part in
the collective construction of a comprehensive ima
ge of computing. For HaPoC 2021, we welcome contr
ibutions from researchers from different disciplin
ary horizons who intend to participate in the deba
te on the impact of computers on culture, science,
and society from the perspective of their area of
expertise, and who are open to engage in interdis
ciplinary discussions across multiple fields. Topi
cs include but are not limited to: - Historical a
nd philosophical perspectives on computing knowled
ge, objects and practices - Social, cultural and p
edagogical aspects of computing - Computing and th
e human sciences - Epistemological dimensions of c
omputing - Impact of computing technologies - Comp
 uting and the arts.
