SUMMARY:First Workshop on Multimodal Semantic Repr
esentations (MMSR 2021): Beyond Language, Virtual
DTSTART;VALUE=DATE:20210614
DTEND;VALUE=DATE:20210618
LOCATION:Virtual
DESCRIPTION:The demand for more sophisticated natu
ral human-computer and human-robot interactions is
rapidly increasing as users become more accustome
d to conversation-like interactions with AI and NL
P systems. Such interactions require not only the
robust recognition and generation of expressions t
hrough multiple modalities (language, gesture, vis
ion, action, etc.), but also the encoding of situa
ted meaning. This workshop intends to bring toget
her researchers who aim to capture elements of mul
timodal interaction such as language, gesture, gaz
e, and facial expression with formal semantic repr
esentations. We provide a space for both theoretic
al and practical discussion of how linguistic co-m
odalities support, inform, and align with 'meaning
' found in the linguistic signal alone. MMSR 2021
is co-located with IWCS 2021. We solicit papers o
n multimodal semantic representation. Two types of
submissions are solicited: long papers and short
papers. Long papers should describe original resea
rch and must not exceed 8 pages, excluding referen
ces. Short papers (typically system or project des
criptions, or ongoing research) must not exceed 4
pages, excluding references. Both types will be pu
blished in the workshop proceedings and in the ACL
Anthology. Accepted papers get an extra page in t
he camera-ready version. We strongly encourage stu
dents to submit to the workshop and will consider
a student session depending on the number of submi
 ssions.
