SUMMARY:Minisymposium "Large cardinals", Virtual (
 Passau, Austria)
DTSTART;VALUE=DATE:20210928
DTEND;VALUE=DATE:20210930
LOCATION:Virtual (Passau, Austria)
DESCRIPTION:This minisymposium will be devoted to
recent developments in the theory of large cardina
ls, a central concept of contemporary set theory t
hat allows the measurement of the consistency stre
ngth of mathematical theories and the ordering of
these theories into a canonical hierarchy. Seminal
results show that large cardinal assumptions them
selves answer many important questions left open b
y the standard axiomatization of set theory and th
is leads many set theorists to think that these ax
ioms should be included in the correct axiomatizat
ion of mathematics. In the last fifty years, set t
heorists have developed a deep and canonical theor
y of large cardinals and, in recent years, breakth
rough results in vastly different regions of the l
arge cardinal hierarchy were obtained. The talks i
n our symposium will cover this wide spectrum of r
esearch, from virtual large cardinal axioms in the
lower reaches of this hierarchy all the way up to
axioms of infinity that contradict the Axiom of C
 hoice.
