SUMMARY:International Spring School on the History
, Philosophy, & Sociology of Large Physics Experim
 ents, Wuppertal, Germany
DTSTART;VALUE=DATE:20220313
DTEND;VALUE=DATE:20220320
LOCATION:Wuppertal, Germany
DESCRIPTION:Large experiments such as the Large Ha
dron Collider (LHC), the Laser Interferometer Grav
itational-Wave Observatory (LIGO), and the Event H
orizon Telescope (EHT) play an essential role at t
he frontiers of contemporary fundamental physics.
These experiments employ big research facilities,
they probe nature at vast energy and length scales
, they produce immense amounts of data, and they i
nvolve great numbers of researchers. During this S
pring School we will explore large physics experim
ents from historical, philosophical, and sociologi
cal perspectives. We will discuss questions such a
s those arising from the history and philosophy of
  fundamental physics, the methodological challenge
s of big data, and the history and sociology of la
rge research collaborations. We invite up to 30 g
raduate students and early career researchers from
history, philosophy, sociology, and physics to pa
rticipate. The application process will be competi
tive and participants will be selected according t
o qualification and research interests. A selecti
on of participants will be given the opportunity t
o give short presentations of their own work as pa
rt of the school. The presentations will be follow
ed by a commentary from a member of the Research U
nit or one of the invited speakers. In case you in
tend to give a presentation, please include in you
r application the title of your talk, and a short
abstract (between 300 and 500 words).
