SUMMARY:International Conference "Philosophical Pe
 rspectives on Sciences", Torun, Poland
DTSTART;VALUE=DATE:20221019
DTEND;VALUE=DATE:20221021
LOCATION:Torun, Poland
DESCRIPTION:Our conference aims to address the rol
e of hypothetical thinking in the formulation and
development of scientific theories and models.Next
year will mark the 550th anniversary of the birth
of Nicolaus Copernicus. We think that it would be
highly pertinent to discuss how our understanding
of the role of hypotheses has changed since his t
ime. Is the use of hypotheses still viable in curr
ent science, or has it been superseded by other sc
ientific concepts or methods? The aim of our confe
rence is to contribute to the dialogue between sci
entists, historians of science, philosophers of sc
ience, and logicians interested in scientific meth
ods of reasoning. Keynote Speakers: Stephen Barr
(University of Delaware, USA) Carl Craver (Washing
ton University in St. Louis, USA) Niccolo Guicciar
dini (University of Milan, Italy) Paweł Kawalec (C
atholic University of Lublin, Poland) Emily Sulliv
an (Eindhoven University of Technology, Netherland
 s) K. Brad Wray (Aarhus University, Denmark) Peter
Vickers (Durham University, United Kingdom). The
conference welcomes formal and informal contribut
ions on any aspects of hypothetical reasoning in s
cience. Topics of interest include, but are not li
mited to the following: - Historical Issues in For
mulation of Hypotheses - Predictive and Explanator
y Power of Hypotheses - Formal Aspects of Hypothet
ical Reasoning - New Trends Disrupting Hypothesis
 Driven Science,
