SUMMARY:The Quantum, the Thermal and the Gravitati
onal Reconciled: Physics and Philosophy in the Var
ied Landscape of the Intersections, Munich Center
 for Mathematical Philosophy
DTSTART;VALUE=DATE:20220624

LOCATION:Munich Center for Mathematical Philosophy
DESCRIPTION:Quantum, thermal, and gravitational th
eories constitute the three great pillars of moder
n fundamental physics. Each is, prima facie, conce
ptually and physically independent of the other tw
o, and finds its application in regimes well separ
ated from those of the others. Indeed, central pri
nciples of each are in manifest tension with those
of the other, if not outright contradiction: gene
ral relativity admits causal and topological struc
tures seemingly inconsistent with quantum mechanic
al dynamics; the superpositions of quantum mechani
cs conflict with general relativity's fixed causal
structures; and both are in manifest tension if n
ot outright contradiction with the most characteri
stic features of thermodynamics, viz., irreversibi
lity and temporal asymmetry. It is thus of paramou
nt importance that we investigate how our three be
st, most fundamental theories fit together, if ind
eed they do at all. In the past and in recent time
s, physicists and philosophers have worked togethe
r in remarkably fruitful ways in each of the three
fundamental fields. This conference will explore
these philosophical and foundational issues that
arise where two or more of these three frameworks
intersect. Our aim is to foster such collaboration
at the intersections of the three. As such, we wi
ll be guided by the irenic spirit (and person) of
Jeremy Butterfield, whose work, magisterially span
ning these topics, has inspired and continues to i
 nspire, all of us.
