DESCRIPTION:Opinions on confirmation and induction
diverge wildly in philosophy of science. At one e
xtreme are those such as the Bayesians, who believ
e that the true system of inductive logic has been
found and all that needs to be resolved are the d
etails. At the other are skeptics, such as some su
pporters of the underdetermination thesis, who hol
d that no logic can vindicate the level of support
scientists claim for their best, mature theories,
for, they urge, the real inductive import of evid
ence cannot be that decisive. Between these extrem
e are many intermediate positions, including the v
iew that the very nature of inductive inference re
mains poorly understood. Our goal in this conferen
ce is to bring together representatives from as ma
ny of these viewpoints as possible in order to adv
ance our understanding of this problem. For more
  information, see http://www.lse.ac.uk/collections
 /CPNSS/events/Conferences/ The Programme Committ
ee cordially invites all researchers to submit the
ir papers for presentation. Submission deadline is
  1 October 2006.
