SUMMARY:5th ENCODE workshop: Group Accuracy, Delib
eration, & Social Influence, Rotterdam, The Nethe
 rlands
DTSTART;VALUE=DATE:20231003
DTEND;VALUE=DATE:20231003
LOCATION:Rotterdam, The Netherlands
DESCRIPTION:According to the celebrated Condorcet
Jury Theorem, if we can dispose of a series of jur
ors who each have an independent, better than rand
om accuracy regarding a binary issue, then the lar
ger the group of jurors we take, the more accurate
the group’s majority opinion on this issue will b
 e. In the limit, the majority opinion will be full
y reliable. This mathematical result has provided
the starting point for a rich literature on the wi
sdom of crowds and democratic decision-making. In
practice however, opinions are not independent. D
ecision-makers are typically connected through net
works of social influence, and before casting thei
r opinion, they may deliberate collectively. When
doing so, the shape of the network, the order in w
hich they exchange information, the levels of trus
tworthiness attributed to them, and strategic cons
iderations are crucial for the eventual outcome of
the process. The aim of this workshop is to cast
light on the role of these and other parameters in
group deliberation, and their implications for gr
oup accuracy and democracy. Participation is free
of charge, but the available spots are limited. P
lease notify us before September 19th in case you
 would like to attend.
