SUMMARY:Computational approaches to metaphor & fig
urative language (DGfS 2024), Bochum, Germany
DTSTART;VALUE=DATE:20240228
DTEND;VALUE=DATE:20240301
LOCATION:Bochum, Germany
DESCRIPTION:Workshop at the Annual Conference of t
he German Linguistic Society (DGfS 2024). Figurat
ive and non-literal language, such as metaphor, me
tonymy, or personification, poses a special challe
nge for computational analysis, since these expres
sions are not used with their usual, ordinary mean
ings, as represented in corpus data or recorded in
lexical resources, but with different, derived me
anings. We aim to bring together computational li
nguists working on the automatic analysis of non-l
iteral language. A special focus will be on non-co
nventionalized usages, such as novel metaphors or
innovative forms of metonymy. In addition, we are
particularly interested in approaches applicable t
o languages other than English, for example low-re
source languages or domains. We welcome contribut
ions dealing with the identification of (specific
forms of) non-literal language, with the interpret
ation of figurative expressions, or with the relat
ion between literal and non-literal meanings in di
 stributional semantic representations. Further, we
are interested in discussing how the meaning of f
igurative expressions is negotiated, for example i
n social media, and how distributional semantic re
presentations can be enriched in order to reflect
figurative meaning. The workshop language is Engli
sh for both abstracts and talks.
