SUMMARY:Symposium of the Swiss Philosophical Socie
ty 2023: Concepts & Their Uses, Bern, Switzerland
DTSTART;VALUE=DATE:20230828
DTEND;VALUE=DATE:20230830
LOCATION:Bern, Switzerland
DESCRIPTION:Philosophical knowledge is often descr
ibed as being conceptual. Therefore, concepts have
been an important topic in phosophy since Plato’s
theory of forms. Very recently, the study of conc
epts has taken new and exciting routes. Experiment
al philosophers investigate the understanding of c
oncepts with tools that are unprecedented in philo
sophy. Drawing on research from the empirical scie
nces, in particular from psychology, philosophers
have taken new approaches to what concepts are and
do. Finally, an increased awareness of problemati
c concepts – e.g., concepts that contribute to dis
crimination – has helped to establish the new fiel
d of conceptual ethics. Against this backdrop, the
symposium of the Swiss Philosophical Society aims
at bringing together and discussing new work on c
oncepts. In this way, we also hope to reflect upon
the self-understanding of philosophy and upon the
contribution that work on concepts can make in br
 oader society.
