SUMMARY:Symposium "Engaging Rationality Today", Li
 lle, France
DTSTART;VALUE=DATE:20240522
DTEND;VALUE=DATE:20240524
LOCATION:Lille, France
DESCRIPTION:The international symposium "Engaging
Rationality Today" will bring together specialists
from multiple disciplines (philosophy, logic, psy
chology, anthropology, linguistics, etc.) to refle
ct collectively on contemporary meanings and uses
of rationality. The current Western cultural conte
xt, which is marked by numerous challenges (war, f
ake news, A.I., populism) and critiques (post-colo
nialism, feminism, etc.), requires a reevalutation
of the classic notion of rationality. They show t
he limits of the classical notion, grounded on con
 cepts like objectivity, universality, argumentatio
n, and causal relationships. But accepting every n
ew conception without criteria seems to give way t
o relativism, thus leading to a dilemma. The sympo
sium "Engaging Rationality Today" aims at tackling
this dilemma by creating a space of dialogue betw
een various conceptions of rationality. To do so,
it is not only a question of examing what rational
ity is, but also, and above all, a question of stu
dying the limits, blindspots, and problematic uses
of the proposed definitions of rationality. The a
im of the present project is to provide a comprehe
nsive view of how rationality is currently underst
ood, from various perspectives (philosophy, psycho
logy, linguistics, etc.). We hope that by examinin
g rationality’s multifaceted aspects, including wh
at falls outside of the proposed definitions, cont
ributors will be encouraged to reevalute their own
defninitions through dialogue with others. True
to our multidisciplinary goals, we invite a broad
variety of approaches and methods and welcome rese
archers from any background. If you would like to
present, please submit an anomymous abstract (max.
of 800 words) in a pdf format. In your application
, please mention in which session (or sessions) yo
ur contribution would be most appropriate. To hel
p make each conception of rationality clearer and
to facilitate the comparison between conceptions,
we ask that each contribution spell out what the a
uthor takes rationality to be, to not be, and what
  remains under-determined. In addition, contributi
ons can (but do not have to) address one of the fo
llowing pairs of guiding questions. They can also
challenge the implied validity of these opposition
s: What does rationality involve? What does it rul
e out? How do we recognize it? What could rational
ity also be? What are its applications and uses? W
hat are its misapplications and misuses? Does it a
ffect us? Can we resist it? What does it allow us
to do? What does it keep us from doing? Does it ha
ve diverse articulations? Or, for it to be rationa
lity, must it always be exactly the same?
