SUMMARY:Course "Logic as a Tool for Modelling", Am
 sterdam, The Netherlands
DTSTART;VALUE=DATE:20240721
DTEND;VALUE=DATE:20240804
LOCATION:Amsterdam, The Netherlands
DESCRIPTION:The course "Logic as a tool for modell
ing" is part of the VU Amsterdam's summer school.
The aim of the course is to introduce participants
to the study of various types of logic as a versa
tile tool for elegantly modelling diverse phenomen
 a. The overarching theme in the handling of applic
ations is the notion of categories and categorisat
ion. The course starts by discussing classical log
ic, through both semantics and syntax, as well as
applications in the social sciences, addressing ag
ency, and information flow. Then it focuses on var
ious theories of categorization from Aristotle's c
lassical perspective to modern prototype and exemp
lar theory and introduces logical formalisms that
encompass these various views. The last part delve
s into formal linguistics, where words are categor
ized based on their role in sentence formation.
