SUMMARY:\n 8th Augustus de Morgan Workshop\n
"Belief Revision, Belief Merging, Social Choi
 ce"\n , King's College London, UK
DTSTART;VALUE=DATE:20061108
DTEND;VALUE=DATE:20061110
LOCATION:King's College London, UK
DESCRIPTION:The process of voting can be seen as t
he aggregation of individual preferences (i.e., th
at of the voters for candidates) to produce a coll
ectively preferred alternative (the result of the
election). This problem is extensively studied by
social choice theory. On the other hand, belief re
vision investigates the dynamics of the process of
belief change: when an agent is faced with new in
formation which contradicts his/her current belief
s, he/she will have to retract some of the old bel
iefs in order to accommodate the new belief consis
tently. The main concern here is how to make a fai
r decision on what old beliefs to retract. There i
s a vaste literature on the subject. Similarly, be
lief merging investigates ways to aggregate a numb
er of individual belief bases into a collective on
 e. Here again, the aggregation procedure in belief
merging faces problems similar to those addressed
in voting theory and belief revision. Although th
ere are clear connections and sharing of principle
s between the areas, the investigation of the simi
larities between the three of them is quite new. T
he main motivation for this workshop is to promote
interaction between researchers of the areas and
generate cross-fertilisation of ideas. For more
 information, see http://www.dcs.kcl.ac.uk/events/A
DMW06/. The Program Committee invites submissio
ns of abstracts in the interface of the above or r
elated areas that investigate common problems. Aut
hors should submit an extended abstract by Septemb
 er, 22nd.
