This problem is extensively studied by social choice theory. On the other hand, belief re vision investigates the dynamics of the process of belief change: when an agent is faced with new in formation which contradicts his/her current belief s, he/she will have to retract some of the old bel iefs in order to accommodate the new belief consis tently. The main concern here is how to make a fai r decision on what old beliefs to retract. There i s a vaste literature on the subject. Similarly, be lief merging investigates ways to aggregate a numb er of individual belief bases into a collective on e. Here again, the aggregation procedure in belief merging faces problems similar to those addressed in voting theory and belief revision. Although th ere are clear connections and sharing of principle s between the areas, the investigation of the simi larities between the three of them is quite new. T he main motivation for this workshop is to promote interaction between researchers of the areas and generate cross-fertilisation of ideas. \nThe process of voting can be seen as the aggregation of individual\npreferences (i.e., that of the vote rs for candidates) to produce a\ncollectively pref erred alternative (the result of the election). Th is\nproblem is extensively studied by social choic e theory. On the other hand,\nbelief revision inve stigates the dynamics of the process of belief cha nge: \nwhen an agent is faced with new informatio n which contradicts his/her\ncurrent beliefs, he/s he will have to retract some of the old beliefs in \norder to accommodate the new belief consistently . The main concern here is\nhow to make a fair dec ision on what old beliefs to retract. There is a\n vaste literature on the subject. Similarly, belief merging investigates\nways to aggregate a number of individual belief bases into a collective\none. Here again, the aggregation procedure in belief m erging faces\nproblems similar to those addressed in voting theory and belief revision. \nAlthough there are clear connections and sharing of princip les between the\nareas, the investigation of the s imilarities between the three of them is\nquite ne w.
