DESCRIPTION:In the upcoming workshop "Acquaintance
, Familiarity & Value" we will explore topics surr
ounding the phenomenon of the “acquaintance infere
nce" of aesthetic language. The use of aesthetic l
anguage to describe an object (e.g., predicates of
  personal taste, aesthetic adjectives, subjective
attitude verbs) invites the inference that the spe
aker has first-hand acquaintance with that object.
E.g., if I tell you that The Birth of Venus is a
wonderful painting, you are likely to assume that
I have seen The Birth of Venus. This seemingly tri
vial observation has intrigued linguists, aestheti
cians, and philosophers of language, especially in
the last 10+ years. Recently, researchers have t
urned their attention to other phenomena with simi
lar features, e.g., the "practical opinionatedness
" inference of moral predicates, the familiarity i
nference triggered by verbs like ‘consider’, or ac
quaintance inferences triggered by other expressio
ns, e.g. appearance predicates. We call for contr
ibutions touching upon these and related topics, s
uch as: the semantics & pragmatics of subjective,
 evaluative, and metalinguistic expressions/languag
 e, multidimensionality, expressivism, and faultles
 s disagreement. Please send a 1-page abstract to a
soriaruiz at ub.edu by July 31st. Selected papers
will be announced by early August.
