Is idealizatio n compatible with realism? Are idealization and ab straction distinct? Should theorists work to elimi nate idealizations as science progresses? Are ther e rules governing the rational use of idealization , or should a theorist's intuition alone guide the process? We would like to see more sustained phil osophical analysis directed at these and related q uestions. To help accomplish this, we will assembl e a small group of philosophers from diverse backg rounds for in depth discussion about the philosoph ical questions related to idealization. The worksh op will be organized to maximize discussion time a nd to ensure that novel material about idealizatio n is given maximum time for discussion. We are esp ecially interested to discuss the more epistemolog ical aspects of idealization, with a lesser emphas is on the detailed case studies that have dominate d much of the recent literature.
