 ms, Herrsching, Germany

DESCRIPTION:Diagrams is an international and inter
disciplinary conference series, covering all aspec
ts of research on the theory and application of di
agrams. Recent technological advances have enabl
ed the large-scale adoption of diagrams in a diver
se range of areas. Increasingly sophisticated visu
al representations are emerging and, to enable eff
ective communication, insight is required into how
diagrams are used and when they are appropriate f
or use. The pervasive, everyday use of diagrams fo
r communicating information and ideas serves to il
lustrate the importance of providing a sound under
standing of the role that diagrams can, and do, pl
ay. Research in the field of diagrams aims to impr
ove our understanding of the role of diagrams, ske
tches and other visualisations in communication, c
omputation, cognition, creative thought, and probl
em solving. These concerns have triggered a surge
of interest in the study of diagrams. The study
of diagrammatic communication as a whole must be p
ursued as an interdisciplinary endeavour. Diagrams
2008 is the fifth event in this conference series
, which was launched in Edinburgh during September
2000. Diagrams attracts a large number of researc
hers from virtually all related fields, placing th
e conference as a major international event in the
area. For more information, see http://www.cmis
 .brighton.ac.uk/diagrams2008/ Diagrams 2008 will
consist of sessions including presentations of ref
ereed papers, posters and tutorial sessions. We in
vite submissions of long and short research papers
, posters and tutorial proposals that focus on any
aspect of diagrams research. Submission deadline
for abstracts is 20th March 2008.
