While achieving this goal could be many decades away, computer sys tems are clearly getting smarter and more reliable year by year and human society is becoming more r eliant on exploiting their increasing intelligence . Logic and machine learning are two indispensable parts of the efforts to meet this challenge. The Summer Schools in Logic and Learning bring togethe r two annual summer schools in the area of logic a nd machine learning: the Logic Summer School and t he Machine Learning Summer School. The Logic co urses will consist of short courses on aspects of pure and applied logic. The Machine Learning cours es will consist of short courses on the theory and practice of machine learning, which combine deep theory from areas as diverse as Statistics, Mathem atics, Engineering, and Information Technology wit h many practical and relevant real life applicatio ns. The courses will be taught by experts from Aus tralia and overseas. The summer schools this year will also include a special track on Artificial In telligence (AI), which will feature courses on asp ects of both logic and machine learning. In additi on to the scheduled courses, time will be set asid e each day for practical classes, discussions and software demonstrations. Deadline for early regi stration: 19 December 2008.
