es 2009: Story Understanding and Generation for Co
ntext-Aware Interface Design, Sanibel Island, Flor

DESCRIPTION:Capturing common sense knowledge often
involves uncovering the implicit, unstated assump
tions behind communication, often best expressed t
hrough stories. Work in story representations date
s back to Schank-style scripts and other efforts i
n the 80s, but recent developments have unleashed
new potential in this area. The maturity of common
sense knowledge bases such as Cyc, Open Mind and
 ThoughtTreasure; statistical and corpora-based nat
ural language understanding techniques; the explos
ion of participatory knowledge collection over the
Web; progress in cognitive science; the popularit
y of Web-based storytelling media such as blogs; a
nd new common sense reasoning techniques are all e
nablers of the new generation of work on common se
nse stories. We are accepting both papers and d
emos to our workshop. Submission deadline is Novem
ber 20th. For more information, see http://csc.med
