DESCRIPTION:Intelligent virtual agents (IVAs) are 
 interactive characters that exhibit human-like qua
 lities and communicate with humans or each other u
 sing natural human modalities such as speech and g
 esture. They are capable of real-time perception, 
 cognition and action that allow them to participat
 e in a dynamic social environment.   IVA'09 is an 
 interdisciplinary annual conference and the main f
 orum for presenting research on modeling, developi
 ng and evaluating intelligent virtual agents with 
 a focus on communicative abilities and social beha
 vior. In addition to presentations on theoretical 
 issues, the conference encourages the showcasing o
 f working applications. Researchers from the field
 s of human-human and human-robot interaction are a
 lso welcome to share work which has a bearing on i
 ntelligent virtual agents. IVA'09 particularly enc
 ourages submissions on this year's special topic o
 f games.   IVA'09 will be co-located in Amsterdam 
 with the complementary Affective Computing & Intel
 ligent Interaction International Conference (ACII'
 09, http://www.acii2009.nl/), held 10-12 September
