This workshop therefore integrates t hese three topics for its theme. The multiple form s of expression to be considered include written w ords, spoken language, the pictorial mode (still a nd moving images), sound, and the gestural mode. A ttention will be focused on the multimodal use of metaphor and metonymy in TV advertising, film, com ics, animation, naturalistic spoken discourse, exp erimental settings, and foreign language teaching. The workshop will feature a combination of plen ary lectures, introducing basic concepts, and hand s-on workshops, in which the plenary speakers will guide participants in the analysis of materials. There will be two plenaries on the analysis of ima ges and two on gestures, and three workshops on ea ch of the modes of images and gestures. The same h ands-on workshops will run on both days so that pa rticipants may take part in two out of the three o n each topic. There will also be time allotted for a poster session by participants who wish to pres ent their own research on multimodal metaphor and/ or metonymy.
