SUMMARY:RaAM 2009: Researching and Applying Metaph
or Workshop on Metaphor, Metonymy & Multimodality,
  Amsterdam, The Netherlands
DTSTART;VALUE=DATE:20090604
DTEND;VALUE=DATE:20090605
LOCATION:Amsterdam, The Netherlands
DESCRIPTION:The analysis of metaphor in different
modalities, not just in written texts, elucidates
the vital ties between metaphor and metonymy in me
aning-making. This workshop therefore integrates t
hese three topics for its theme. The multiple form
s of expression to be considered include written w
ords, spoken language, the pictorial mode (still a
nd moving images), sound, and the gestural mode. A
ttention will be focused on the multimodal use of
metaphor and metonymy in TV advertising, film, com
ics, animation, naturalistic spoken discourse, exp
erimental settings, and foreign language teaching.
The workshop will feature a combination of plen
ary lectures, introducing basic concepts, and hand
s-on workshops, in which the plenary speakers will
guide participants in the analysis of materials.
There will be two plenaries on the analysis of ima
ges and two on gestures, and three workshops on ea
ch of the modes of images and gestures. The same h
ands-on workshops will run on both days so that pa
rticipants may take part in two out of the three o
n each topic. There will also be time allotted for
a poster session by participants who wish to pres
ent their own research on multimodal metaphor and/
or metonymy. The Programme Committee cordially
invites all researchers to submit their papers for
presentation. Deadline for registration is Marc
 h 15, 2009. For more information, see http://www.r
