DESCRIPTION:This symposium marks the start of a ne
 w initiative to boost Cognitive Science research a
 t the University of Amsterdam. Following the desig
 nation of Cognition as a key research area of the 
 UvA, a small committee of researchers from the CSC
 A was asked to draw up a proposal to promote colla
 borative research between groups of different inst
 itutes. One of the key elements of the proposal is
  the establishment of a new institute where resear
 chers from different disciplines will work togethe
 r on a programme to resolve questions regarding th
 e mechanisms underlying human (and animal) cogniti
 on. The new institute will be located near the Spi
