SUMMARY:Dialogues and Games: Historical Roots and
 Contemporary Models, Lille
DTSTART;VALUE=DATE:20100208
DTEND;VALUE=DATE:20100209
LOCATION:Lille
DESCRIPTION:A two-day workshop covering historical
and modern aspects of games and dialogues in logi
 c. Studies in the history of logic have shown tha
t the medieval traditions, both in western Europe
and in India, have many distinctive dialogical and
epistemological characteristics. As a result, the
y have much more in common with each other than th
ey do mathematical logic of the 1950's. Recently,
it has become apparent that these shared character
istics can be fruitfully modeled in the context of
modern developments in logic, which are dynamic a
nd dialogical in flavor. We believe that investiga
ting the common properties of these two historical
approaches can advance our understanding of these
philosophical and historical traditions with the
help of recent technical advances in dialogical an
d game semantics and dialogue games. The purpose o
f this workshop is to bring together LogICCC resea
rchers from both the philosophical and technical t
raditions to provide a spring-board for collaborat
ion and potential cross-discipline applications, a
llowing people working in both historical traditio
ns, the Western and the Indian, to gain knowledge
of current modeling techniques and those on the te
chnical side access to new problems and theories t
o model. The four fields that we intend to repres
ent are: the dialogical tradition in Indian logic,
obligationes in medieval Western logic, dialogica
l semantics and dialogue models, and games for dia
logues and semantics. Each day there will be two t
utorials; the first day will cover the historical
topics and the second day will cover the modern te
chniques. For more information, see https://www.i
