SUMMARY:International Conference "History and Phil
 osophy of Computing", Ghent, Belgium
DTSTART;VALUE=DATE:20111107
DTEND;VALUE=DATE:20111110
LOCATION:Ghent, Belgium
DESCRIPTION:The computing sciences collect the mos
t diverse complex of experts: philosophers, logici
 ans, historians, mathematicians, computer scientis
ts, programmers, engineers. The number of involved
subjects grows accordingly: from foundational iss
ues to their applications; from philosophical ques
tions to problems of realizability and design of s
pecifications; from theoretical studies of computa
tional barriers to the relevance of machines for e
ducational purposes. A historical awareness of t
he evolution of computing not only helps to clarif
y the complex structure of the computing sciences,
but it also provides an insight in what computing
was, is and maybe could be in the future. Philoso
phy, on the other hand, helps to tackle some of th
e fundamental problems of computing, going from th
e limits of the 'mathematicizing power of homo sap
iens' to the design of feasible and concrete model
s of interactive processes. The aim of this confer
ence is to bring together these two streams: we ar
e strongly convinced that an interplay between the
researchers with an interest in the history and p
hilosophy of computing can crucially add to the ma
turity of the field. For more information, see h
 ttp://www.computing-conference.ugent.be or contact
computing.conference at ugent.be. We plan to ha
ve up to 30 contributed papers to be presented at
the conference. We welcome contributions from logi
cians and philosophers or historians of science as
well as from philosophically and/or historically
aware computer scientists and mathematicians. Dead
line for Papers Submission: 15th May 2011.
