SUMMARY:LENLS8: Logic and Engineering of Natural L
 anguage Semantics, Takamatsu, Japan
DTSTART;VALUE=DATE:20111201
DTEND;VALUE=DATE:20111202
LOCATION:Takamatsu, Japan
DESCRIPTION:LENLS is an annual international works
hop focusing on formal semantics and pragmatics. I
t will be held as one of the workshops of JSAI isA
I 2011, sponsored by The Japan Society for Artific
ial Intelligence (JSAI). This year's workshop fo
cuses on the theme of "Where is dynamic semantics
now?". Flavours of dynamic semantics (world updati
ng, assignment changing, etc.) have been broadly a
pplied to solve problems in linguistics (notably a
nything related to anaphora) and philosophy (e.g.,
foundational issues of context, the role of varia
bles) and have prompted the development of a diver
se range of frameworks with replicable formal resu
lts. However in recent years direct appeals to the
dynamic metaphor have been waning, as has the exp
licit development of novel systems, or even refine
ments to or mergings of older systems. Has dynamic
semantics been so successful in solving its probl
ems that all that remains for discussion are imple
 mentational differences among established paramete
rs, or have debates simply shifted to new issues?
Either way now seems an apt time to take stock and
question where the decades of research have taken
us and where we might hope this legacy to send us
in the future. For more information, see http:/
 /www.is.ocha.ac.jp/~bekki/lenls/. We invite subm
issions to this year's workshop on topics in forma
l semantics and pragmatics, and related fields. Ab
 stract submission deadline : August 31, 2011.
