SUMMARY:Madrid-Tilburg Workshop: Statistics and Sc
 ientific Method I, Madrid, Spain
DTSTART;VALUE=DATE:20111215
DTEND;VALUE=DATE:20111216
LOCATION:Madrid, Spain
DESCRIPTION:Scientists spend a lot of time testing
a hypothesis, and classifying experimental result
s as (in)significant evidence. But even after a ce
ntury of hot debate, there is no consensus on what
this concept of significance implies, how the res
ults of hypothesis tests should be interpreted, an
d which practical pitfalls have to be avoided. Ou
r workshop brings together the perspectives of phi
losophers and methodologists, statisticians and pr
actitioners. Contributions on all aspects of hypot
hesis testing that relate to the use and interpret
ation of those tests, and their role for scientifi
c inference, are welcome. The workshop will be foc
used on debate, with a discussant for each paper,
no parallel sessions and active engagement between
the participants. For more information, see htt
 p://hypothesistests.wordpress.com/ We invite sub
missions of extended abstracts (up to 1000 words)
 by 20 September 2011.
