SUMMARY:Foundations of Mathematics: What are they
and what are they for?, Cambridge, UK
DTSTART;VALUE=DATE:20120710
DTEND;VALUE=DATE:20120712
LOCATION:Cambridge, UK
DESCRIPTION:The role of set theory as a foundation
of mathematics has been criticized from various s
tandpoints. The conference aims to shed light on t
his debate by asking what foundations of mathemati
cs are and what they are for. Some people unders
tand foundations as providing a justification for
mathematics; others as providing the subject matte
r of mathematics; others still as providing us wit
h an arena within which to settle all questions of
existence and proof in mathematics. The conferenc
e will bring together philosophers, logicians and
mathematicians to discuss whether any of these sen
ses of foundations should be privileged. The prosp
ects for a pluralistic approach to foundational is
sues will also be considered. For more informatio
 n, see http://www.phil.cam.ac.uk/foundations/ We
invite papers suitable for a 40 minute presentatio
 n. The deadline for receipt of submissions is: 16t
 h March 2012.
