The role of set theory as a foundation of mathematics has\n been criticized from various standpo ints. The conference aims\n to shed light o n this debate by asking what foundations of\n mathematics are and what they are for.\n

\nSome people understand foundatio ns as providing a\n justification for mathe matics; others as providing the subject\n m atter of mathematics; others still as providing us with an\n arena within which to settle all questions of existence and\n proof in math ematics. The conference will bring together\n philosophers, logicians and mathematicians to d iscuss whether\n any of these senses of fou ndations should be privileged. The\n prospe cts for a pluralistic approach to foundational iss ues\n will also be considered.
