Wittgenstein is one of th e most important philosophers of the 20^th century and he considered his most significant contributi on to be in the philosophy of mathematics. Neverth eless, this contribution has received far less att ention than the rest of his work. Recent research shows that early interpreters often failed to appr eciate the radical nature of his critique of the o rthodoxy. It also suggests that his philosophy of mathematics still contains much from which the fie ld can profit. We therefore intend to discuss the development of Wittgenstein's philosophy of mathem atics, the debates it has already provoked and the lessons it might hold for contemporary debates.
