SUMMARY:Workshop on Information and Decisions in S
 ocial Networks, Cambridge MA, U.S.A.
DTSTART;VALUE=DATE:20121108
DTEND;VALUE=DATE:20121109
LOCATION:Cambridge MA, U.S.A.
DESCRIPTION:During the last decade, it has become
clear that network interactions have a much larger
role in our lives than had previously been apprec
iated: social networks have a defining impact on n
ot only consumer choice but are also central in so
cial and political decisions ranging from the poli
tical discourse in the blogosphere to the organiza
tion and coordination of protests in the Arab spri
ng. Similarly financial networks seem at the heart
of the 2008 crash. Network effects are now seen a
s major elements in other domains with human decis
ions including healthcare, public health, smart po
wer grids, urban transportation, and more. As a co
nsequence, both businesses and government are incr
easingly looking to build new types of networks to
improve management abilities. This workshop is
intended to bring together researchers from differ
ent communities working on information propagation
and decision making in social networks to investi
gate both rigorous models that highlight capabilit
ies and limitations of such networks as well as em
pirical and simulations studies of how people exch
ange information, influence each other, make decis
ions and develop social interactions. For more i
 nformation, see http://wids.lids.mit.edu/ All con
 tributions, theoretical, empirical, and experiment
al, on social networks are welcome. Authors are in
vited to submit an abstract of one to three pages
by the deadline of September 15, 2012.
