SUMMARY:History and Philosophy of Infinity (FotFS
 VIII), Cambridge, England
DTSTART;VALUE=DATE:20130920
DTEND;VALUE=DATE:20130923
LOCATION:Cambridge, England
DESCRIPTION:The concept of infinity has fascinated
philosophers and mathematicians for many centurie
s: e.g., the distinction between the potential and
actual infinite appears in Aristotle's Physics (i
n his treatment of the paradoxes of Zeno) and the
notion was implied in the attempts to sharpen the
method of approximation (starting as early as Arch
imedes and running through the middle ages and int
o the nineteenth century). Modern mathematics open
ed the doors to the wealth of the realm of the inf
inities by means of the set-theoretic foundations
of mathematics. Any philosophical interaction wi
th concepts of infinite must have at least two asp
ects: first, an inclusive examination of the vario
us branches and applications, across the various p
eriods; but second, it must proceed in the critica
l light of mathematical results, including results
  from meta-mathematics. The conference History & P
hilosophy of Infinity will emphasize philosophical
, empirical and historical approaches. For more
 information, see http://www.math.uni-bonn.de/peopl
 e/fotfs/VIII/ The Programme Committee cordially
invites all researchers to submit their papers for
presentation. Submission deadline is 31 May 2013.
