SUMMARY:International Workshop on Diagram Logic an
 d Cognition 2013, Kolkata, India
DTSTART;VALUE=DATE:20131028
DTEND;VALUE=DATE:20131029
LOCATION:Kolkata, India
DESCRIPTION:Our world is increasingly visual, and
diagrams are an essential aspect of many of the fi
elds that try to make sense of it. These include d
 emography, cartography, medical imaging, aviation,
and so on. In particular, diagrammatic logic is g
aining ground in logic and mathematics as an alter
native to or when used in parallel with symbolic l
ogics, and recent years have seen the appearance o
 f increasingly expressive diagrammatic systems.
The purpose of the workshop is manyfold. Firstly,
we want to gain deeper insights into the activitie
s involved in reasoning with diagrammatic systems:
how can a modern, highly-expressive diagrammatic
logic help with inferential tasks in practice, suc
h as those undertaken in the field of knowledge en
gineering? Our second purpose, closely related to
the first, is cognition: the verbaliser-visualiser
cognitive style classification. Finally, our meet
ing will also focus on the topics of diagram aesth
etics and visual complexity. For more informatio
 n, see http://www.cem.brighton.ac.uk/dlac2013/ or
contact one of the organisers, Jim Burton (j.burto
n at brighton.ac.uk) or Lopmudra Choudhury (choudh
uryl at yahoo.com). We invite authors to submit
an extended abstract (3-4 pages) via easychair. Su
bmission period ends: 2nd July 2013.
