SUMMARY:Workshop: Constructing the World, Cologne,
  Germany
DTSTART;VALUE=DATE:20130524
DTEND;VALUE=DATE:20130526
LOCATION:Cologne, Germany
DESCRIPTION:The Emmy Noether research group "Under
standing and the A Priori" is hosting an author-me
ets-critics workshop with David Chalmers to critic
ally discuss themes from his new book, "Constructi
ng the World" (Oxford University Press 2012). The
book concerns "scrutability," the thesis that all
the truths about the world can, in principle, be k
nown on the basis of knowledge of just a limited c
lass of basic truths. Chalmers argues for the scru
tability thesis and investigates which sorts of ba
sic truths can serve as the relevant "scrutability
base". The book explores the implications of scru
tability for a range of central philosophical issu
es: meaning and mental content, the existence of t
he analytic and the a priori, the refutation of sk
epticism, and the methodology of metaphysics, amon
g others. Participation in the workshop is open,
but there is a limited number of available places
, and email registration is required by April 30,
2013. For more information, see http://fromthearmc
 hair.net/events/constructing-the-world Two sessio
ns for the workshop will be determined on the basi
s of blind review of submissions, and so intereste
d researchers working in all areas of philosophy a
re encouraged to submit abstracts for 45-minute pr
esentations devoted to critical discussion of any
of the themes of the book. The deadline for submis
 sions is March 31, 2012.
