LOCATION:London, U.K.
DESCRIPTION:The second conference in the AHRC-fund
ed series on Mathematical Cultures will take place
at De Morgan House (London) 17-19 September 2013.
This meeting will articulate and classify mathema
tical values. What do mathematicians mean when the
 y use terms such as ~deep~, ~elegant~, ~explanator
y~, etc.? What is the rational structure of the de
liberations mathematicians use to reach value judg
ments (in PhD examinations, book reviews, journal
referee reports, etc.)? How much variety is there
in mathematical values between mathematical cultur
es? What are the virtues of a good mathematician?
Speakers will include: Prof Alan Bishop, Prof Pau
l Ernest, Prof Jose Ferreiros and Prof Emily Grosh
olz For further details, please see the conferen
