SUMMARY:Conference "(Re)presenting the Speech of O
 thers", Groningen, The Netherlands
DTSTART;VALUE=DATE:20140313
DTEND;VALUE=DATE:20140314
LOCATION:Groningen, The Netherlands
DESCRIPTION:There are different ways of reporting
what someone else has said. Common forms of speech
reports are direct speech (Mary said 'I am sick')
and indirect speech (Mary said that she is sick).
Pretense and role play are closely related phenom
ena. Like in direct speech, someone engaging in ro
le play adopts the perspective of another person a
nd produces utterances from that shifted standpoin
t (I am sick). Another interesting parallel is tha
t children start to use speech reports and to enga
ge in role play at around the same time, namely at
two to three years of age. This is well before th
ey pass standard false belief tests (at around fou
 r) which are often taken to be the hallmark of The
ory of Mind and metarepresentation. Since at least
some forms of reported speech exhibit recursion,
intensionality, and/or clausal embedding, this dev
elopmental gap may shed new light on the debate ov
er the relationship between Theory of Mind and the
syntax/semantics of recursive embedding. The aim
of the conference is to discuss the cognitive and
conceptual relationship of reported speech, preten
se and cognitive abilities such as perspective-tak
ing, metarepresentation and Theory of Mind. For
 more information, see https://sites.google.com/sit
e/representing2014/ We invite authors to submit a
 n anonymous two-page abstract by 1 December, 2013,
for a talk of 20 minutes plus 10 minutes discussi
on or a poster. We welcome theoretically and empir
ically oriented contributions addressing some of t
he conference's topics of interest from the perspe
 ctives of (psycho)linguistics, philosophy, psychol
 ogy or semantics.
